History of Khalif Temple #144

Khalif Temple was chartered August 23, 1945 at the Imperial Council Session, under Dispensation. With 48 charter members, 25 Nobles created and 9 Nobles demitting into Khalif, the membership was 82 at the time of charter. The first Illustrious Potentate of Khalif was Noble Izone Huntley. Noble Huntley and others worked hard to bring a Shrine Temple to Greensboro. The initial meetings were held in the Odd Fellows Hall on East Market Street. The Nobles of the Temple aggressively developed standard Imperial Council Programs and continue in this mode, assuring its standing as one of the most progressive Temples in the Domain.

The current Khalif Mosque was purchased in 1976; the mortgage was burned in 1979. This was one of the most cooperative efforts by all Nobles, led by the officers of those years.

Khalif performed many outstanding community projects in its early years. One project that stood out was the help provided by Nobles of Khalif Temple during the outbreak of Polio in Greensboro. The Nobles collected donations from the black community for the building of a Polio Hospital. Many Nobles in jobs of trade, donated numerous hours of service in the actual building of this Hospital.

Khalif charities started early and have blossomed to over $35,000 annually. During its 50th year, Khalif pledged $30,000.00 to equip a Physical Fitness Room at the Hayes-Taylor YMCA.

The Temple became involved in Little League Baseball over 30 years ago and currently sponsors three Little League Teams.

Khalif hosted its first annual Sickle Cell Charity Golf Tournament in 1980. Donations to Piedmont Health Services and Sickle Cell Agency (PHSSCA) now total over $320,000.00. These and other charitable activities of Khalif Temple continue in the spirit of the Ancient Egyptian Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine.

Khalif Temple is proud of its units, a Marching Patrol, Color Guard, Jazz Combo, Mini-Cars and Chanters. All units participate in Desert and Imperial competitions, as well as parades in Greensboro and across the state. The Chanters are requested by numerous organizations and churches to participate in their events and programs.

Khalif Temple No. 144 and Khalif Court No. 90 organized a Bowling League in the late 1970's. The bowlers are members of the Shrine Travel Bowling League; a league of Nobles and Daughters from Temples and Courts from the East and Mid-West that complete on a regular basis as each member Temple and Court hosts the tournament in a scheduled rotation.

The Temple organized a Golf League in the 1990's and currently has a membership of over 30 Nobles.

In 1980 Khalif was able to secure a HUD Project for 50 Unit Homes for the Elderly and Handicapped in Sanford, NC. Occupancy levels have been at least 99% since opening day. The Project was dedicated in September 1983 and is incorporated under the name of Sanford Homes, Inc., with its Governing Board composed of Nobles of Khalif Temple No. 144.

Khalif has had three Imperial Deputies of the Desert in its 50+ years; Nobles Clarence Madden, C. A. Levette Jr., and Elmer Legrand. Currently, the membership of Khalif Temple No. 144 exceeds 270 Nobles. We have a desire to sustain this trend of growth as we continue to search for persons of distinction in the service of Truth, Justice and Mercy to fill the rolls of Khalif Temple No. 144.
